LulzSec Targets the CIA in Latest Breach – Perhaps They Should Re-Think That One?
Theft Protection No Comments »Rogue hacker group, LulzSec, has waged ‘war’ this week on a number of government web sites. We recently covered their breach of the U.S. Senate site, and now they have gone after the holy grail, the CIA web site.
LulzSec essentially rendered the CIA’s public web site inaccessible yesterday and the group promoted its efforts via Twitter: Tango down cia.gov for the lulz, said a tweet on the LulzSec Twitter feed. The phrase Tango down is from the Tom Clancy videogame called Rainbow Six, which means that the enemy has been killed.
LulzSec claims to have used a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack to bring down the site.
While LulzSec may be viewed as an organization that is poking its finger in the eye of the establishment, it made us wonder if the CIA is an ideal target. Yes, the CIA is one of the most powerful organizations in the Intelligence Community, and you don’t have to read a Tom Clancy book to know that the CIA is good at bringing about justice.
Also, it does not take a security clearance to confidently say that the CIA is most likely – and very actively – putting their resources towards bringing down LulzSec. Perhaps the cyber war is now actually on ? It will be interesting to see how this one shakes out. We welcome all thoughts, comments and feedback.
